But in today\u2019s modern world a candy bar is never far away. What happens when you feed those sweet teeth of yours? A whole mess of problems.<\/p>\n<h3>What Happens When You Eat Too Much Sugar<\/h3>\n<p>First of all, it\u2019s bad for your teeth. Too much sugar is almost always a recipe for cavities. When the bacteria on your teeth eat sugar, they produce acid that damages the enamel. That\u2019s a prime reason to limit your sugar intake and always brush your teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Sugar may also contribute to weight gain. Research suggests that eating too much fructose reduces the effect of leptin, the hormone that tells your body when it\u2019s had enough food. Like an alcoholic that builds up a tolerance for booze, our high-sugar diets may be fooling our bodies into thinking they\u2019re not full. More room for empty calories, right?<\/p>\n<p>Too much sugar and you won\u2019t only be dealing with leptin resistance, but also insulin resistance. Insulin helps you convert food into energy, but your body\u2019s sensitivity to that hormone is reduced. Common symptoms of insulin resistance include fatigue, hunger, and high blood pressure. It\u2019s important to recognize these symptoms before insulin resistance graduates to full diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>And the parade just keeps rolling. Too much sugar will also damage your liver*, your kidneys, and your pancreas. Excess fructose is a prime culprit for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, increased risk of pancreatic cancer, and kidney damage. Sugar may also impact hypertension and heart disease. According to the CDC, there is \u201ca significant relationship between added sugar consumption and increased risk for CVD (cardiovascular disease) mortality.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Sugar Is Still Your Friend (in Moderate Doses)<\/h3>\n<p>After that last section, you might be itching to go on a strict sugar detox. Cutting down on sugar is always a good idea, but you don\u2019t want to scrap it completely. Your body needs sugar to survive!<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what the symptoms of low blood sugar are? Your blood sugar, or glucose, is your fuel. It\u2019s the pep in your step. Your main source of glucose comes from carbohydrates, such as rice, potatoes, bread, cereal, fruit, vegetables, and milk. Cut too many carbs and you\u2019re likely to experience the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blurred vision<\/li>\n<li>Dizziness<\/li>\n<li>Shakiness<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Mood swings<\/li>\n<li>Sweating<\/li>\n<li>Confusion<\/li>\n<li>Tingly skin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And you\u2019ll probably be hungry, too!<\/p>\n<h3>Cutting Out Sugar Isn\u2019t Easy<\/h3>\n<p>The good news is, you don\u2019t need to cut sugar completely to lose weight and feel great. The bad news is, our diets are packed with way more sugar than we realize.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the World Health Organization lowered its adult sugar intake recommendations to five percent of your daily calories. That works out to about 25 grams of sugar per day. Let\u2019s put that into context: One can of coke has 39 grams of sugar.<\/p>\n<p>You can see why this is a problem.<\/p>\n<p>Cutting unnecessary sugar from your diet isn\u2019t easy. It requires a lot more planning and cooking than a lot of us have time for.
