Apple cider vinegar has been around for thousands of years and has been used for healing purposes for almost just as long! There are many stories of celebrities using apple cider vinegar to lose weight, to overcome illness and use as a daily tonic. But what health benefits does apple cider vinegar really offer?

In addition to its uses as a cleaning agent and odor neutralizer, apple cider vinegar has also been shown to:

  1. Detoxify the Body – The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar binds to toxins and aids in eliminating them from the body. Apple cider vinegar also stimulates circulation to the liver and kidneys and provides protection from oxidative stress, allowing these organs to better function – and do their jobs of detoxifying the body. Apple cider vinegar has also been shown to break down mucus and clear lymph nodes, allowing for better elimination of toxins and immunity from invading microbes.
  2. Antibacterial – Apple cider vinegar has been proven effective as an antibacterial agent, inhibiting the growth of organisms such as Escherichia coli.
  3. Protect the Liver and Kidneys – Animal studies show that apple cider vinegar has a protective effect against kidney and liver oxidative stress, lowers lipid levels in mice fed a high-cholesterol diet, inhibits lipid oxidation, and increases levels of antioxidant enzymes and vitamins. Some evidence suggests that apple cider vinegar has free radical scavenging effects, as well.
  4. Break Down Fat – Apple cider vinegar has been shown to aid in the breaking down of lipids (fats) and reduce the accumulation of fat in the body. It has also been shown to lower LDL cholesterol (the “bad” kind) and triglycerides.

Apple cider vinegar offers many health benefits and is easy to add to your daily regime. Try taking 1-3 tablespoons or apple cider vinegar daily. If you can’t handle the strong taste, try adding to salad dressing or mixing in juice, a smoothie, or even a glass of water.
